“We had received intelligence by Oct 7th” Special Statement from Acting IGP

Sri Lankan security forces have implemented enhanced security measures in the Arugam Bay area following reports of a potential threat targeting popular tourist locations, Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya said

“We have put in place a special security program to address possible threats,” Weerasooriya said, adding that the decision was made in response to intelligence reports linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. “As the intelligence services engaged in thorough surveillance operations, by the 7th of October we obtained intelligence reports that an attack would likely target some foreign nationals in the country.”

Weerasooriya guaranteed the safety of all foreign nationals in Sri Lanka, assuring that diplomatic missions have been properly informed about the safety measures that have been taken.

The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka issued a security alert on October 23, warning American citizens of the possible risk in Arugam Bay.
