Showers are expected in the sea areas from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle, with possible thundershowers from Mannar to Kankasanthurai in the evening or night, the Department of Meteorology said.
South-westerly winds will blow at 30-40 km/h, increasing to 60-65 km/h from Mullaittivu to Mannar via Kankasanthurai, and up to 50 km/h in other areas around the island.
Sea conditions will be very rough off the Mullaittivu-Mannar coast and rough elsewhere, with wave heights reaching 2.5-3.0 meters.
A depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal, is expected to move west-northwestward and make landfall along the northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh coasts by the morning of October 17.
The system is forecast to bring strong winds of 60-70 km/h, heavy rainfall, and rough sea conditions to the affected regions.
Swell waves of 2.5 to 3.0 meters are expected offshore between Chilaw and Pottuvil, passing through Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota, with possible surges near the coast.
The Meteorology Department advised naval and fishing communities, to avoid venturing into these areas until the evening of October 17. (Newswire)
