President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will appoint an interim cabinet tomorrow, according to a senior NPP leader who spoke to NewsWire.
With Parliament expected to be dissolved soon, targeting elections at the end of November, the new cabinet is expected to remain in office until a new Parliament convenes with newly elected MPs.
Currently, Vijitha Herath and Harini Amarasuriya are the only NPP MPs in Parliament. They will soon be joined by Laxman Nipunarachchi, who will take the seat vacated by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
It remains unclear whether the NPP will initially govern with a four-member cabinet, which includes President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, or if the cabinet will expand.
Last week, NPP Executive Committee Member Wasantha Samarasinghe mentioned that an interim government could be formed, reflecting a broad Sri Lankan political identity, after the NPP’s victory in the presidential election.
During his speech, Samarasinghe emphasized that, among the 222 members of Parliament, there are capable MPs from the North, East, and estate sectors who will be selected to form the interim government.
“Initially, there will be four members in our Cabinet, including Comrade Anura. After further discussions, the Cabinet may expand to seven or eight members, representing various parts of the country,” he said.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has already appointed Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, a former customs official, as Secretary to the President. (NewsWire)
