“Won’t last 3–4 months”: President warns Opposition over councils without mandate

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has issued a strong warning to opposition parties, stating that any attempt to hijack the public mandate given to the National People’s Power (NPP) will be met with stern action, reminding that he holds a two-thirds majority in Parliament.

Addressing the 60th anniversary celebration of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) in Colombo today (14), the President said the NPP has received the mandate to govern 267 local councils, with plans to establish control in 152 on the first day, and the remaining 115 soon after.

He criticized opposition parties, stating they lack the mandate to govern, with some only securing one or two members per council.

He warned that any council formed against the public mandate would not last more than three to four months. (Newswire)
